Hello students.

I hope you are all staying healthy and safe during these crazy weeks. At this time there is no official guidance on what your learning will look like during the closure.

Please remember to turn in your Holocaust Found Poem. You can email me a picture of this anytime between now and next Friday the 20th. If you have technology or other issues that make this difficult, please email me.

3/10/20

Today students worked in groups to review chapters 7-9. We also did some practice with analyzing quotes from the book and had some time to brainstorm ideas for the found poem.

If absent: Please answer both the review questions and do the quote work from today's discussion. (slides 2-3) Answers can be emailed to Mrs. Santos.

Chapter 7-9 Discussion

Remember we will have work time for the found poem on Friday. You should come prepared with any materials you will need (printed pictures or words, paint, coloring tools, poster/canvas/other supplies).

Homework due Thursday: Read Wiesel's Nobel Prize acceptance speech.

Today students participated in a graded discussion on chapter 1-6 of Night. If Absent choose 4 of the questions below and submit a written response to the questions to Mrs. Santos. Email is fine if students are home for health concerns.

Please read chapters 7-9 for tomorrow.


What do you appreciate about Wiesel’s writing?
What themes have you seen so far in the text? Why are they significant? Use specific evidence to support each one.
How does Elie’s relationship with his father change? How does it compare to other fathers and sons?
Why are we still reading Night today and learning about the Holocaust? What is Wiesel’s purpose for writing Night?
What moments in particular in the memoir have been the most striking to you, or shocking? What makes these moments significant?
How has Elie’s faith changed throughout the course of the memoir? Use text evidence to track it.
What is the role of fire throughout Night?
Why is the memoir titled Night?

Today we discussed chapters 4 and 5 of Night. Students also worked in groups to identify examples of the themes and motifs present thus far in the memoir.

Today students worked on the Holocaust webquest. Students should visit as many of the websites in the document below as they can. Write down at least 5 new things you learn about the Holocaust and try to gather 10 potential phrases for your found poem from the various sources.
