Today students participated in a graded discussion on A Small Place and then we reviewed for the exam.

If absent, answer 3 of the 7 questions below to make up the discussion and hand in to Mrs. Santos.

1.What sentences in the excerpt most moved you as a reader, or impacted you in some way? Why?

2.Summarize the content of the excerpt. What is this excerpt mostly about and why? What’s Kincaid’s point? Do you think she’s right? Why?

3.In what ways, besides size, is Antigua “small”?  Why do you think Kincaid chose the title A Small Place for her work?

4.Does tourism enhance or detract from the lived experience of Antigua, both for the tourist and for the inhabitants of the island? How does Kincaid feel about the tourists? How do you know?

5.What is the significance of the buildings or locales that Kincaid dwells on: e.g. the lavatory, the library, the country club, the bank, the airport, the hotel, the taxicab, the beach?

6.Describe the way that Kincaid’s style conveys her tone. How do you know how she feels?

7.How does this text make you think about yourself as a tourist when you travel to another country? How can we avoid being the “ugly American” stereotype?
